27 May “Where Did You Get the Musical Clock?”
Q: Why is it so hard to figure out what I should be focusing on at any given time during the day?
A: Perhaps you need to STOP and take time to think each hour of the day.
My mother-in-law bought a clock that plays melodies from Sam’s Wholesale Club. You can set it for classical, easily listening songs or holiday numbers. It sells for $99 and is sometimes on sale for $79.
It drives my daughter nuts when she hears it. She told us we could never buy it for her son, but something made us purchase it for him. He loves to hear it ring on the hour. (We’re grandparents, so we get to do things like that.)
I should mention that we bought one for our home, too. Here’s what’s also unique about it. When it plays (on the hour), all the numbers on the face of the clock scramble and turn upside down while the music is playing. When the melody stops the numbers are all aligned and back where they should be.
As I watch it play on the hour, I am reminded that it could represent how we feel throughout the day. Everything happens so fast. Time flies by. It is jumbled and doesn’t always make sense. But if every hour we would STOP and just think about what we’re doing, we would have a chance to make sure we are working on our most essential priorities—the ones that will make a real difference in our customers’, team members’ and organization’s lives.
ACTION STEPS TO HELP YOU PRIORITIZE
- List all the things you must get done today.
- After you make the list, determine the priority of each item. Is it (A) Most Essential, (B) Essential or (C) Less Essential.
- Be sure that you do all of you’re A’s first. Then do your B’s. Then do your C’s.
- Every hour look at your list to see whether you’ve added anything new.
- If so, Re-prioritize so that you are always working on the most essential A items.
