Are Your Leaders on the Cutting Edge?

I have always told the leaders of my organizations to continually find a way to be on the cutting edge of their particular discipline or their area of expertise. Some asked how to do that.

If you’re new to leadership or new to your field, there are several ways that you can do this:

  • Spend time with people in all the other departments so that you truly know what they do.
  • Visit your competition so that you can see how they do what they do— in particular things that you don’t do.
  • Find a leader in a huge organization that you can shadow or meet with occasionally so that you know how things are done in the very biggest of companies.
  • Find a leader in an organization that is your size so that you can exchange ideas with them.
  • Visit organizations that are in totally different industries than your own and note how they do what they do.
  • Keep a list of what you learn from the five points above and begin to study it for ideas that you might be able to implement.

Some of the ideas will be “stolen” from what you’ve learned. Others will be the creative ideas that you come up with because you’ve taken time to think about it.

By doing all of the above you will also learn how creative you are. Too many people do not think they are creative, when, if they took the time to do the research, they’d find out that they can be very creative and get better and better results.
